Video Game Design Conference for Middle and High School Students
Oct 01, 2007 Posted by randy.rockafellow ( 7176 Reads)
The Other Side of the Screen: A Video Game Design Conference for Middle and High School Students. The conference will be held at Wayne State University’s Community Arts Auditorium, from 2-6pm. For tickets and more information please call: John Wolff, (313) 874-5832. Presented by Urban Electronics Game Developers Association (UEGDA)

On Sunday, October 21, 2007 Urban Electronics Game Developers Association
(UEGDA) will present their first conference for students who are interested in
learning more about video game design. John Wolff, a senior at Detroit Country
Day High School started UEGDA last year, after being encouraged by his father to
learn more about the industry. “My father thought that I spent too much time in
front of the screen playing video games, and suggested that I learn a little more
about the other side of the screen”, laughed Wolff who has been designing video
games ever since.
His interests in game design lead him to a conference in Chicago where he came
into contact with the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). He
attended a chapter meeting on the campus of U of M and knew that he wanted to
get a group of his friends together to explore the industry. (See link below:
http://www.thedetroiter.com/b_city/blogs/index.php?blog=2&title=teenaged_game_developers_urban_ele
ctroni&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1) UEGDA has met on Sundays for the past year; this
conference is the next step in its evolution.
The conference will be held at Wayne State University’s Community Arts
Auditorium, from 2-6pm. The focus of the conference will be on the three basic
elements of game design, and how to take a game from being an idea to market.
Students will be able to stroll through exhibits which contain information about
the industry and profession. The cost is nominal: $3 per person; $5 for a team of
two; and $2 per person for groups of ten or more. All are welcome! The
Midtown Detroit Kumon Math and Reading Center is the major sponsor of this
event. The Center is located at 1100 St. Aubin in Detroit’s Lafayette Park area. For
tickets and more information please call: John Wolff, (313) 874-5832.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Michigan Group Markets Pure Michigan Creative Talent at SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Convention

Detroit, MI, August 3, 2007 — The Southeast Michigan Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH (SEMAFX) is promoting Michigan's creative technology industry for the third year in a row at SIGGRAPH the largest international computer graphics conference in the world being held August 5th through 9th 2007 in San Diego,CA. This marketing campaign follows last year’s successful “Great American Road Trip” where a motor coach covered in advertisements for Michigan creative companies and organizations along with the slogan “Digital Artists Onboard” toured the conference area. This year’s campaign will feature T-shirts with the slogans “Get Pure Talent” and “Get Raw Talent” and websites www.getpuretalent.com and www.getrawtalent.com.

At SIGGRAPH, we want the outstanding message to be that you can count on the creative companies and talent in Michigan to perform the work. Michigan has a strong creative technology industry that can handle a variety of projects ranging from film and video, animation, audio, architectural visualization, video game development, multimedia, motion capture, mobile media, and Internet development. However, many people, including those in Michigan, don't realize how much we have to offer and we have the potential right now for significant growth to be internationally known as a creative TechTown.

There will be many Michigan Creative Technology ambassadors providing information and news about Michigan's capabilities. Those who are unable to attend will have an opportunity to share the experience through the podcasts SEMAFX will be creating using G-cast enabled technology during the San Diego conference by visiting: www.semafx.com. Conference attendees will receive T-shirts and buttons featuring the campaign’s slogans.

Supporters of the campaign welcome the opportunity to help build awareness of Michigan's creative technology industry and how it can fuel Michigan's economic recovery. These companies include: Chrysler Group, Armstrong White, RTT, LaDriere, Right Hemisphere, Bunkspeed, Badittoi Photographic, Detroit Creative Group, Npower Software and Autodesk.

Film Festivals WMU profs' film screened at Waterfront Festival
Jun 17, 2007 Posted by scott ( 1326 Reads)

KALAMAZOO--A short film by two Western Michigan University professors was recently screened at the Waterfront Film Festival.

"Vol. 3. Illegal Art," a short film by two faculty members in the WMU School of Communication, was shown Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10, at the four-day festival in Saugatuck, Mich., in the Michigan Film Lodge, which features Michigan filmmakers.
Now in its ninth year celebrating independent film and filmmakers, the Waterfront Film Festival is one of the leading destination film festivals in the Midwest, regularly hosting Midwest premieres of Academy Award-winning and nominated documentaries.

Drs. Rebekah Farrugia and Jennifer Machiorlatti, WMU assistant professor and associate professor of communication, respectively, produced "Illegal Art" as part of the "Copyright, Culture (remixed)" series. The series is a volume set of short films that explore the impact that increasingly restrictive copyright laws have on fair use and the creation of culture. They underline the ways in which creativity is, and will continue to be, hindered if current, excessive intellectual property policy continues.

The "Illegal Art" episode features the traveling art show "Illegal Art: Freedom of Expression in the Corporate Age" during an exhibit at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood in Hollywood, Fla. Curated by Carrie McLaren, the multimedia show illustrates the gray areas of U.S. copyright law and "fair use" which is essential to artists' abilities to both critique and create culture. Works in the exhibit include remixed CNN footage of George W. Bush and the Teletubbies, Barbie Dolls in blenders and Heidi Cody's "American Alphabet."

"We were especially proud of being selected to be part of the Michigan Film Lodge, because it allows Michigan filmmakers to gather and exchange ideas about our productions, the state of the film industry in Michigan and recent efforts to attract more film production from out of state to boost the economy," Machiorlatti says.

Other screenings of "Illegal Art" include the Can Indie Film Festival in Toronto, the Hawaii Arts and Humanities Conference in Honolulu and the University Film and Video Association conference in Orange, Calif. It was selected as one of six finalists to launch Docupyx on the Pyxix Documentary Web channel at www.docupyx.com.

Farrugia researches gender and popular music and was recently invited to submit an essay on music sampling for Vague Terrain, a digital arts quarterly with monthly audience of more than 10,000 viewers. Her work has appeared in "The Journal of Popular Music Studies."

Machiorlatti has screened films at the Dallas Video Festival, the International Women's Festival and the Big Muddy Film Festival. She researches women in film and video and is in production on a feature documentary on indigenous women in film and video.

Farrugia and Machiorlatti's multimedia installation "Outsider Outside/her" was exhibited in the Photon Flow exhibit at the Glass Curtain Gallery in Chicago in summer 2005.

Film Festivals KAFI Film Festival coming up on May 17-21 in K'Zoo!
Feb 11, 2007 Posted by scott ( 1314 Reads)
On May 17-21, the Kalamazoo Animation Festival International (KAFI) will return as the premier animation festival of the Midwest and one of the top 20 animation festivals in the world.

One of the featured attractions of KAFI 2007 will be a comedy writer who has been involved with “The Simpsons” for more than half of its 20-year run. Mike Reiss, a four-time Emmy winner for co-producing more than 200 episodes and penning a dozen "Simpson" scripts, will be featured on Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m. in the State Theater.

And is your team ready? The 2007 KAFI Cartoon Challenge™ entry opens January 2nd and closed on Feb 9th. So I hope you got in! The Challenge pits ten teams of animation students from college and art schools across the continent, who will spend four intense days and nights on the campus of Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Their mission is to create a 30-second animated public service announcement (PSA) for television broadcast.

Over the years, KAFI has welcomed animators and industry veterans from such companies as Pixar, Disney, Nickelodeon, Hanna Barbera, Electronic Arts, Cartoon Network, Adobe, Dreamworks, Animation World Network, PBSKids, and Alias (now Autodesk).

Additionally, we’ve welcomed animators and educators from Sheridan College, College for Creative Studies, Art Institute, Max the Mutt Animation School, Columbia College, Bowling Green State University, San Jose State University, and others.

KAFI has been privileged to screen many Academy Award winning and nominated films for such as “Ryan” (2004) by Chris Landreth, “The Moon and the Sun” (2005) by John Canemaker, “Guard Dog” (2004) by Bill Plympton and “Das Rad” (2003) by Chris Stenner and Heidi Wittlinger.

KAFI is preparing for their biggest and greatest festival ever. With each festival, KAFI continues to bring the highest quality and commitment to the arts and education for entrants, attendees and special guests.

I'd like to see lots of participation by SEMAFX members. Anyone already planning to go? There are screenings, workshops, lectures, contests and more! Let's be there in force!
Plan now to attend this exciting event!

As an organization that serves young children and their families, we must take every precaution to ensure that our volunteers are held to the same high standards as the Festival staff. The few pieces of information that you provide on the Waiver will allow us to conduct a criminal background check. After the Festival, the Waiver form containing your personal information will be destroyed.

Announcements Armstrong White creates 3D short for Salvation Army
Feb 09, 2007 Posted by Mark.DeRidder ( 1942 Reads)
Armstrong White has just finished a 7 minute 3D animated short film for the Salvation Army. The short heads up an education kit that will be handed out to participating local schools in an effort to inform and motivate kids to help raise money for the Jr. Bed & Bread Club. The Bed & Bread Club sends out trucks everyday to help feed and shelter the homeless of metro detroit.

Featuring the voice of Dick Purtan and couple of Purtan's People, the short is about a Bed & Bread truck's first day on the job and he isn't too excited about it. We follow "Harrison" as he starts to understand his purpose and importance.
